“Niecy’s Sleepover” is the first story in the Grandma B. & Me (Books 1 – 4) collection. I wanted to share this one online with you. It’s a quick story that is ideal for preschoolers to hear or for intermediate readers to read to family members (ex. little sister or grandma). In addition to reading practice, you can also ask questions or do activities with these stories.
Vocabulary word:
Namesake – a person named after someone else
Questions you can ask:
- Who is Grandma B.’s namesake? (Niecy)
- What is the name given to Grandma B. and Niecy? (Bernice)
- Why do you think they are called “Grandma B.” and “Niecy” instead of Bernice? (Someone could say so no one gets confused, Niecy is little, Niecy couldn’t say her name, etc.)
- Where is Niecy’s most favorite place to visit? (Her grandmother’s house)
- What things does Niecy do there? (May say sing, dance, hide-and-seek, hear bedtime stories, etc.)
Activities/Think about it:
- Why didn’t Grandma B. ride Niecy’s big wheel? (She said she was too big.)
Talk about size. What things might your child have that is smaller than you? Silverware, clothes, chairs, etc. - Sometimes, children are too small to go where adults go. Where might an adult be too big? Play spaces like bounce houses, “big girl” beds or cribs, some amusement park rides, etc.
- Why do you think it was easy to find Niecy behind the curtain? (Adult stand behind the curtain and have shoes stick out.)
Music: Dance & clap between stories. Sing your favorite songs.
Movement/Active play: Play hide-and-seek. Ride bikes (Look at the size of the bike and the size of the person riding. Why is size important? Think about safety.)
Art: Draw your favorite part of the story.
